Cracks in the city are very often marked as abandonned constructions or walls in the city, such as railways or bridges. The constructions have sometimes even an important history with an important social past, such as stations, factories or hospitals. These empty places are real 'cracks' and everybody wants them away, because it brings unsecurity, darkness and dirt.
Except of some of us! All over the world there are groups that feel attracted to these empty constructions, to explore them, to make pictures of their inside holes and leftovers... These 'urban explorations' are also very active on the internet.
There is the zine and paperzine Infiltration from Toronto, with a lot of information from all over the world on empty houses, factories, hospitals, boats, churches,.. Funny on this website is for instance the 'guide to swimmingpools in Hotels', that explains you how to slip into hotels and get wet!
Cities Like Berlin (Ostwall, Relikte, Bunker) or Moscow (Abandoned, Docent, Novisibirsk Diggers Speleopage have really a lot of Urban Exploration groups. Not only pictures or videos, also games are made of their underground city. Also, Belgium has a lot of these freaks (Forgotton Places, Onderwereld, Tchorsky Underground Exploration).
The Urban Exploration Ring conects all these underground city lovers with a common banner on their web.
