Last weekend the group La Makabra ocuppied the empty factory Can Ricart. An empty factory for two years in struggle by neighbors and activists to give this place a public social-cultural dimension. Two fronts gathered - La Makabra as a creative space, and the neighborhood searching for a public use of one of its left over factories - to make a point in urban transfomation. Barcelona is struggling with it's 'design' urban model, which doesn't fit in the desires of the inhabitants. Even the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights/Housing, Miloon Kothari, has approved this occupation, after seeing the housing situation in Spain.
Now, after 35 hours of tension in the yes/no occupation, sunday evening (03/12, 23h) the City Council left over the space to the occupants.
A victory for the ongoing ocupation and cry for autonomous creative spaces in the city. One victoory in Barcelona. But this struggle is alive all over the world. Independent public creative places is a must! This creativity makes the richdom of the city and the wellbeing of individual expression that explanes the cultural atraction of urban life!
Can Ricart / La Makabra makes the difference!!
